Summary: Zach Braff (from the TV show "Scrubs") stars in his writing/directing debut, "Garden State"--normally a doomed act of hubris, but Braff pulls it off with unassuming charm. An emotionally numb actor in L.A., Andrew (Braff) comes back to New Jersey after nine years away for his mother's funeral. Andrew avoids his bitter father (Ian Holm, "The Sweet Hereafter") and joins old friends (including the superb Peter Sarsgaard, "Boys Don't Cry") in a round of parties. Along the way he meets a girl (Natalie Portman, "Beautiful Girls") with demons of her own; bit by bit the two offer each other a little healing. Plotwise, "Garden State" is familiar stuff, a cross between "The Graduate" and a Meg Ryan movie, but Braff has an eye for goofy but resonant visual images, an ear for lively dialogue, and a great cast. The result is surprisingly fresh and funny. "--Bret Fetzer"

The Gift

Summary: Take a pinch of psychic phenomenon, add a dash of Southern gothic, stir in a sharp cast of talented actors, and you'll come up with "The Gift", director Sam Raimi's ingenious gumbo of a thriller. It doesn't hold together as well as Raimi's earlier "A Simple Plan", but the two films are stylistically connected--"The Gift" was cowritten (with Tom Epperson) by "A Simple Plan"'s costar, Billy Bob Thornton, who in turn draws from the Deep South milieu that informed his own "Sling Blade" and his earlier collaboration with Epperson, "One False Move". A similar sense of mystery permeates "The Gift", in which a small-town Georgia psychic (perfectly played by Cate Blanchett) is tormented by tragic loss and visions connected to the murder of a local vamp (Katie Holmes) whose schoolteacher fiancé (Greg Kinnear) is a prime suspect.
Other suspects include a hot-tempered bully (Keanu Reeves) whose battered wife (Hilary Swank) is one of the psychic's regular clients, and a traumatized local (Giovanni Ribisi) who is tenuously stabilized by therapy and antidepressants. While this trio of potential killers keeps the mystery alive, the requisite red herrings don't add much to the film's low-level suspense. Instead, Raimi is far more effective in creating an atmosphere of anxious dread that wells up from each of these finely drawn characters, starting with the widow psychic's extended mourning for her lost husband, the agonized terror of a beaten wife, and the percolating anger of a cuckolded spouse. All of this makes "The Gift" a worthy showcase for its esteemed cast, even as its plot twists grow increasingly familiar. "--Jeff Shannon"

The Girl Next Door

Director: Luke Greenfield
Starring: Emile Hirsch, Elisha Cuthbert, Timothy Olyphant, James Remar, Chris Marquette
Genre: Comedy
Rated: Unrated
My Rating:
IMDB Rating: 6.8 (27,363 votes)
Duration: 109
Release: Aug 2004

Purchased On: 30 Jul 2007
Summary: While it suffered a nearly unanimous beating from critics, "The Girl Next Door" attracted more than a few loyal defenders during its brief box-office lifespan. It pales when compared to its teen-comedy role model (the 1983 classic "Risky Business"), but you've got to admit that "any" movie about a teenager whose new next-door neighbor is a 19-year-old former porn star has bona fide cult-movie potential. To its credit, this rather schizoid blend of sleaze and comedy boasts an engaging pair of costars in Emile Hirsch (as the smitten, voyeuristic virgin) and "24"'s Elisha Cuthbert (as his sexy new house-sitting neighbor). And there are some good laughs in a script that takes unexpected turns when we learn that Cuthbert's character is trying to leave her porn-star past behind, to the chagrin of her pimp-like producer (Timothy Olyphant, in a scene-stealing role). Faring somewhat better than he did with the Rob Schneider non-comedy "The Animal", director Luke Greenfield clearly recalls the turbulence that goes hand-in-hand with being young, horny, and confused. There's honesty and even (dare we say it?) maturity to be found in this raging-hormone fantasy, even if it's partially buried in a convoluted plot that's appalling or appealing, depending on your tolerance for good-natured prurience. "--Jeff Shannon"

Go

Director: Doug Liman
Starring: Katie Holmes, Sarah Polley, Suzanne Krull, Desmond Askew, Nathan Bexton
Genre: Action & Adventure
Rated: R

IMDB Rating: 7.3 (28,300 votes)
Duration: 102

Summary: Director Doug Liman's follow-up to the winning "Swingers" is a rollicking adventure that, while lacking in any substantial plot, speeds along with nonstop adrenaline and style to burn. Taking a cue from "Pulp Fiction", Liman plays tricks with time and overlapping plots, all of which play out in L.A. and Las Vegas in a 24-hour period sometime between Christmas and New Year's. Slacker grocery-store clerk Ronna (Sarah Polley) is trying to score rent money by selling hits of Ecstasy at a rave party, but winds up inadvertently double-crossing a ruthless dealer (sexy and scary Timothy Olyphant). She's also invading the dealing turf of her coworker Simon (Desmond Askew), a Brit on his first trip to Vegas, which turns nightmarish after a jaunt with pal Marcus (Taye Diggs) to a "gentleman's club" turns violent. And then there's the two soap-opera actors (Jay Mohr and Scott Wolf) who cross paths with Ronna more than once in their attempts to divest themselves of a drug-related charge by participating in a sting.
The way Liman and writer John August layer these stories owes a huge debt to Quentin Tarantino, but the comedy and action sequences rocket like a bat out of hell with energy, humor, and genuine surprise. In addition to some hilarious dialogue exchanges--including a classic scene between Ronna's stoned friend (Nathan Bexton) and a Zen cat--Liman works wonders with one the most winning ensembles in recent memory, a cast that includes both established actors and TV cuties. Mohr, Diggs, and especially Polley (doing a 180 from her turn in "The Sweet Hereafter") are as excellent as you'd expect, but it's Wolf (of "Party of Five") and "Dawson's Creek"'s Katie Holmes (as Polley's best bud) who turn in revelatory work; Holmes especially seems poised to be a breakout star. An amazing cinematic ride--like a roller coaster, you'll want to go back again and again. "--Mark Englehart"

The Golden Child

Summary: Things started going downhill for Eddie Murphy around the time of this 1986 clunker, in which the comic actor plays a social worker predicted to be the savior of a kidnapped child, who has special powers to heal the Earth. Dennis Feldman's script and director Michael Ritchie ("The Candidate"), a once-thoughtful satirist, stumble over every link in a chain of fantasy-fueled sequences. Murphy phones it in, and Charles Dance ("Pascali's Island") looks foolish in retrospect. "--Tom Keogh"

Summary: Jennifer Aniston gives a career-changing performance in "The Good Girl", a movie that questions whether goodness is a virtue or a trap. Justine (Aniston), weary of her dead-end retail job and her childless marriage to Phil (John C. Reilly), diverts herself with a new coworker named Holden (Jake Gyllenhaal), who feels as ill-treated by his life as Justine does with hers. The empathy between them leads, all too quickly, to an affair--which just as quickly turns into an obsession that threatens to destroy Justine's marriage. But this is only the beginning; Phil's buddy Bubba (Tim Blake Nelson), the store security guard (Mike White), and a handful of other characters all have a part to play in the unraveling of Justine's life. The script and performances of "The Good Girl" are subtle but vivid, and the movie's emotional impact will linger long after the movie is over. "--Bret Fetzer"

The Goonies

Summary: You may be surprised to discover that the director of the "Lethal Weapon" movies and scary horror flick "The Omen", Richard Donner, also produced and directed this classic children's adventure (which, by the way, was written by Donner's screen-wizard friend Steven Spielberg). Then again you may not. "The Goonies", like Donner's other movies, is the same story of good versus evil. It has its share of bad guys (the Fratelli brothers and their villainous mother), reluctant-hero good guys (the Walsh bothers and their gang of friends), and lots of corny one-liners. Like in an old-fashioned Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew plot, the Goonies need to solve a problem: a corrupt corporate developer has bought out their neighborhood and plans to flatten all their homes. Luckily, the beloved gang stumbles on a treasure map. In the hopes of finding the treasure to buy back their houses, the Goonies embark on their quest through underground passages, aboard pirate ships, and behind waterfalls. This swashbuckling and rollicking ride was also a great breeding ground for a couple of child actors who went on to enjoy numerous successes in adulthood: Sean Astin ("Rudy", "Encino Man") and Martha Plimpton ("Pecker", "200 Cigarettes"). "--Samantha Allen Storey"
